Let’s Play Pretend 005

Let’s all just play pretend

Wait, we are too good at this

Tell that to all the lovers we’ve met

Others we’ve ignored when they were not looking

Those with the perfect image,

unblemished even after past lives but still we filtered them

Looking for damages in places there were none

But aren’t we really the damaged ones?

Edging through the door, piece by piece

Slipping to the other side before they knew we were gone

We just wanna speed away and leave no trail

If only we could tip the scale,

make us lighter, less scared to want things

There is not really much out there anyway

Hey ye of little faith, have you never made a wish to the wind?

Wait a minute, is that a trick question?

No one said anything about going in deep

Let’s keep it simple, let’s play pretend.

Let’s Play Pretend 003

Let’s pretend that we didn’t start running to give ourselves a headstart

That we both waited long enough to bolt out

And there was the grace period before we pushed the clock forward into the future

Where even the heart with the best intention has a mind of its own

Hey, I know from somewhere. Have we met before?

The hard swallow as we dust away our memories

There are no ghosts left in my corner

No, you must have me confused with someone else

Let’s pretend that we were all pure when we first met

Those days we fed each other only parts we loved

Putting the price of gold in even the tinniest things

Like the touch of a hand

Such hands are evasive

Such hands know more than they are telling

But they are really useless if they can’t send us to places we’ve never been

Like thriving in the underbelly of a heart

Where it is easy to reach in and squeeze out the air

Is that what you mean when you say you are out of breath?

Let’s play pretend 001

What’s that they always say, make peace with the mirror and smile?

But who’s that on the other side?

Come out, let’s play pretend

Let’s pretend that all liars first met in the streets

and they followed each other home

And behind closed doors, they schemed how to trick us all

Let’s pretend that it’s never really a lie

until you learn to choose the right side

When no one else is listening

Let us all make holes in our fortress of solitude,

so that we can hear each others think

Let us build bridges in between the spaces

so we can learn to speak in the code of silence

When all the voices are pleading to get in

Let us all run to the edges and seal all the openings

When the lies are ready to spill

Let us all build a wall

so we can shut out the pain

Let us cover our eyes with pride

so we never have to meet at the kitchen table

Closeted lover

It must be such a burden to be a closeted lover

You poor soul, lost in another person’s story

Searching for something you can’t find

Treasuring things that have never been yours

Or those that go away too easily

What has the world done to you?

I’m a terrible lover

Stepping on toes,

Looking over my shoulders,

I am here for a while,

Then I go back to the arms I once knew,

But I crawl back to the heart that feeds on me,

I manipulate the heart that needs me,

Taking too much, giving too little

Or giving nothing at all,

Expecting to find kisses floating in the air

I’m a terrible lover,

Throwing love in the dust,

But I’m a lover in training.

Rhyme scheme

That moment when you get the rhyme right:

Goodbye love

If your face should stir in the glare of the moon
Awake from the depths of a midnight swoon
To find the warmth beside you gone
And the sadness within you grown
No hands of a lover to hold in a dream
Or body to clasp in a passionate steam
Goodbye love

Imagine a world where love did not happen
Where two soulmates could bump on each other and move on
Where roses held no meaning
Where love songs were war songs
Where Harry never met Sally
Where The Notebook never existed
Where Cinderella’s glass slipper didn’t fall off
Where even after a kiss, the frog remained a frog

Imagine a world that had never tasted the thrill of words
Or the beauty of rhythm
Or the edge of a subtextual writer

Imagine a world where all poets were masons in the tower of Babel
Trying to find rhythm in the clanking of hammers
When words had failed

Imagine a world where poetry had gone to sleep
And someone forgot to wake it up
Imagine us all moving on to a future that couldn’t tell the magic of its past

Imagine us forgetting it ever happened
Imagine us forgetting the passion of E. E Cummings
I carry your heart with me, I carry it in my heart
The defiance of Maya Angelou
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise

Imagine us forgetting the eeriness of Edgar Allan Poe
A wind blew out of the cloud,
Chilling my beautiful Annabel Lee
The hope of Claude McKay
I shall return again, I shall return
To laugh and love and watch with wonder eyes
The longing of Odysseus
There is the heat of love, the pulsing rush of longing,
the love’s whisper, irresistible magic to make the sanest man go mad
Imagine us forgetting it all
Imagine a world with no poetry…

Labour of Love

You can’t hurry love, you can’t stagnate it either
It’s a caress, it’s a rupture
It needs wings to soar above the sky
Sometimes, the wings need to be clipped
so that he can catch you before you fall

It needs speed, fast foot and thumping heart
acting on a whim so you don’t lose him to another
Sometimes, it needs breaks in between the kisses
To prolong the moment, to savour every embrace
To breathe in the cologne from his favourite shirt

It needs to be caged, confined
so it builds to the maximum
so it blossoms and spills beyond its barriers
so it flows like a river
But sometimes, it needs to be let loose
to run wild, to be tested
So it can fight battles, lose some, win some
Test the strength it didn’t even know it had

It needs bridges to help it to the other side
To join two love stories into one
teach new lovers a trick or two
Sometimes, it needs to stand at the edge of a cliff
to be jolted back to reality
So nothing is taken for granted

It comes towards you, and you open your heart wide, ready to be taken
You curve your palms around it, hold it whole
Sometimes, it escapes from your grasp
even when you thought you had it
Yeah, it surprises you in your sleep
the space beside you becomes colder

It flees at breakfast
when the teacup is warmer than the stare from across the table
It goes with a letter, left in a hurry, a coward goodbye
It goes right to another’s doorstep

Sometimes, it follows you, pursues you, stalks you
Floods your answering machine
slips notes under your door
Buys you flowers that make you sneeze
It scares you and you run away…
